Jake Levy

Jake’s practice encompasses a broad range of transactions in the entertainment and media industries, with an emphasis on television, motion picture, book publishing, celebrity branding/endorsement and music matters. He represents both individuals and companies, including award-winning documentary and narrative filmmakers, directors, writers, producers, literary authors, talent and broadcast journalists, as well as leading production companies, media agencies, financiers and distributors.

Jake regularly acts as production counsel on scripted and unscripted television, motion pictures, digital media and virtual reality productions and advises clients from development through distribution, including on privacy and publicity, copyright, defamation and content clearance issues. He also counsels high level authors on book publishing agreements and intellectual property rights matters and negotiates motion picture and television adaptation agreements for their works.

Jake has been recognized by Super Lawyers New York Metro edition as a “Rising Star” in 2015 - 2017. He is a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).

Jake speaks on entertainment industry topics at venues such as the Sundance Film Festival, NYU Law School and The Juilliard School. Prior to joining the firm, Jake was an associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett where he provided strategic counsel on transactional intellectual property and corporate law matters.

Representative Work

  • Representing documentary and narrative filmmakers, directors, writers, producers and talent at both independent and studio levels.
  • Supervising business affairs and providing legal counsel to non-scripted (including documentary) and scripted television, film, digital and virtual reality production companies.
  • Counseling fiction and non-fiction authors on publishing and collaboration agreements and motion picture and television rights agreements.
  • Advising personalities, media agencies and fashion/lifestyle brands in all aspects of endorsement, sponsorship and merchandising matters.
  • Negotiating complex financing and distribution transactions, including international co-productions.
  • Drafting and negotiating agreements for visual artists, bands, producers, songwriters and other content creators.
